Oh yeh, and even after all that you still need the CD in the drive.

But even if you follow that process, you still have to connect to the net at least once, so if you are in the middle of nowhere with a laptop and you didn't have time to install HL2 before the trip, you are SOL on playing half life 2. Then they force you to use steam even if you bought the retail CD, you have to install the game with the CD key, make a steam account, wait 30-45min for steam to decrypt the games off the CD, then every time you play it has to connect to the internet unless you follow a pain in the ass process to prevent it from doing so. Oh, and let's not forget the upcoming "ATI Levels." I don't care what you say, no company in the history of video cards has ever bent over for a company like Valve has for ATI, granted they were paid a lot of money, but it is rather sickening. Then prior to HL2's launch Valve lied about ATI X800 cards running the game 40% faster than Nvidia 6800 cards, when they turned out to be pretty close in actual gameplay. They went on and on, made graphs showing how crappy the nvidia cards were, then they bitched about spending 3x as long writing partial precision shaders for nvidia cards (which, btw, aren't actually in the game). During ATI Shader Day 2003, Valve put on a dog and pony show about how ATI was the best graphics card since sliced bread, and how Nvidia cards sucked. Then, the final, and most insulting part is the way Valve has treated its userbase. And to be honest, it was just plain boring for a lonnnng stretch through the middle. I felt like I was playing Source: The Game instead of half life 2. There was the sci-fi shooter theme (city 17), the horror shooter theme (ravenholm), the "our engine supports vehicles" theme (hovercraft/buggy), the tactical team combat theme (follow freeman), the massive overuse of physics to show what the engine can do, massive overuse of pixel shaders even when they looked out of place to show what the engine can do, etc. Half of the time the story was not cohesive, and it seemed like every type of game was thrown in there even if it made no sense. But the rest of the game felt like a gimmick, a tech demo fleshed out with every possibility to sell a game engine. Don't get me wrong, the first 45mins and last 2 hours were excellent. FarCry has all of this and was released long before HL2.īut perhaps most importantly was the gameplay that disappointed me. Nor does it support mixed shader precision features. Plus, it doesn't support FP16 HDR Lighting. Then in terms of technology, it does not support the latest dx9 shader technology, it supports last years' sm2.0 technology instead of this year's sm3.0.

Then there is the lighting, which is poor compared to the lighting in Doom3 & FarCry. For instance, some of the enemies, such as the headcrab zombie, looked like it could have been ripped out of any $9.99 budget game. Other graphics in the game range from average to mediocre. The main things half life 2 have going for it are detailed textures, and detailed NPC facial animations. Moving on to the next disappointment is in graphical technology. So all in all, the game seems half baked in terms of the large amount of bugs it has. And even with mouse drivers, the source engine has issues with my Logitech mouse driver. Despite it being an ATI endorsed game, ATI cards suffer from a rainbow texture bug at times, and Nvidia cards suffer from a texture lighting bug at times. This doesn't only affect HL2, but all source engine games.

I beat the game, and by the end of the game every 10 mins or so I would get a 5-10 second pause with sound stuttering. First of all, as a general game engine, the source engine is probably the buggiest FPS engine I've ever seen released in modern times, with "Memory could not be read" crash errors and sound stuttering/freezing on virtually every combination of hardware out there. Half life 2 was a disappointment on so many levels for me. Well, I've posted bits and pieces of how I've felt about the game before, now a week after beating it I have collected my thoughts about it, and this is what I can say.
